Katie Bemisderfer

  • received a certificate of achievement from the UGA Career Center describing her student-nominated recognition for having greatly contributed to the career development of RLST students.

John Dattilo

  • was selected as a member of the UGA Teaching Academy
  • gave a keynote address titled "A Part from the Start: Inclusive Leisure Services" at the Leisure, Inclusion and Disability Congress in Bilbao, Spain on July 4th.
  • spoke to professionals, students, and family members about "Facilitating Leisure for Individuals with Disabilities" at the Institute on Human Development and Disability in Athens on September 30th.

Douglas Kleiber

  • is the recipient of the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) 2003 Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt Award given to a distinguished scholar whose research contributions are of the highest quality, as judged by academic and professional peers, and whose research contribution represent productivity sustained over time. He was presented with the award at the Awards Celebration Event of the NRPA Congress held in St. Louis on October 23rd.
  • presented "Taking Leisure Seriously" to the Athens Council on Aging as part of the Learning in Retirement Program sponsored by the UGA Gerontology Center and the Institute of Higher Education on September 29th.

Gwynn Powell

  • received funding for her proposal on the College of Education Partnership with the ACC Public Schools for a graduate assistant for 2004-2005 to help in writing curriculum and providing supervision for after-school programs.
  • spent two weeks at the end of summer as a consultant for the American Camping Association collecting data as part of the National Camp Outcomes Research Project in summer camps in the northeastern U.S. Gwynn also attended the UGA Fall Opening Convocation.
  • received a seed grant from the Faculty Research Grant Program through the UGA Office of Vice President for Research for the proposed study "Investigating a Path to Active Living: Project WALC (When Active Children are Leaders)."
  • presented "Fostering the Creative Problem-Solving Process during Structured After-school Time" at the International Conference on Creativity and Imagination in Education and Methods of Mastery in Moscow, Russia in November and expanded contacts for establishing a study abroad program with Russian summer camps.

Diane Samdahl

  • authored a rejoinder to a paper by Edward Jackson in 2003 The Journal of Leisure Research 35(3), 321-324, titled "Intentional insularity? Alternative interpretations of JacksonŐs analysis."
  • taught this fall 10 undergraduate students enrolled in the new honors seminar (HONS 1990H) titled "Concepts of leisure, culture, and simplicity."

Mike Tarrant

  • completed another successful field-based course to the Smokey Mountains taking 22 students, 17 from RLST, 2 from Forest Resources and 3 from Anthropology.
  • is coordinating and teaching a 12-week (15 semester credits) study abroad program "Sustaining Human Societies and the Natural Environment" at two locations this spring semester for six weeks each: University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand and University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia (www.uga.edu/oie/oznz with 35 students.
