Congratulations Students
Congratulations Students Doctoral student, Paul Schlag, has focused much of his graduate education on developing expertise in instructional technology and has created a personal innovative web page at http://www.arches.uga.edu/~pschlag/paul/
John Paul McNeal and Gwynn Powell attended the Public Service and Outreach Annual Conference "Building Economic Prosperity: Partnering to Break the Cycle of Poverty" held on January 29th to learn more about UGA's Poverty Initiative.
Michael Tarrant and Uttiyo Raychaudhuri made presentations at the Southeastern Recreation Research Conference in Charleston, SC on Feb 8th - Feb 10th "Environmental Justice of Locally Desirable Land" by Zhang and Tarrant, "Environmental Justice on the Wilderness Fringe: A GIS Based Analysis" by Raychaudhuri, Tarrant, and Zhang, and "Creating User-Interactive Guide for Environmental Justice Protocol: A Demonstration in Active Learning with Technology" by Bhattacharya, Tarrant and Raychaudhuri. Uttiyo was also a reviewer for conference proposals.
Students in Gwynn Powell's RLST 5430/7430 Camp Administration course hosted a "Staff Recruiting Roundtable" on February 2nd for employers on campus for the Summer Employment Day sponsored by Career Services. Nine camp directors, including alum Rudy Dunlap, discussed recruiting and management strategies.
Nathalie Guerin is a recipient of the 2004 UGA Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award and was recognized at Honors Days.
Gwynn Powell presented a session "Soaring With My Heroes, Broadening My World: Cultural Understanding through Sport" at the Georgia National Association of Multicultural Education on behalf of professor, Billy Hawkins, and graduate students, Meri Cambre, Angela Cobbs and Jaret Walton on March 13th in Peachtree City, GA.
Camp Administration Outdoor Education Laboratory students led an "Outdoor Adventure Day at UGA" on March 27th at the Oconee Forest for 75 Girls Scouts from the NE Georgia Council. The outdoor skills day was planned during a class camping trip at Panther Creek organized by Carly Robinson and Gwynn Powell.
Meri Cambre is the interim director of Camp Toccoa that is operated by Campfire of Georgia; Meri served as Assistant Director during the past two summers.
Doug Kleiber and John Dattilo participated in a retreat with Lynne Cory, Brent Wolfe, Nathalie Guerin, Heather Reel, Angela Loucks-Atkinson, Jaekwon Na, Joe Wassif, K.B. Hoffman, Katie Bitner, and Annie Hagberg at Clemson on April 8-9, to study theories relevant to therapeutic recreation with Clemson faculty, Judy Voekl and Fran McGuire, and several Clemson graduate students.
Stacey Marcus, sponsored by Gwynn Powell, presented her research "Camp Counselor Interactions during Program Activity Leadership: Guiding Staff Supervision" at the UGA Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) Symposium on April 12th.
Uttiyo Raychaudhuri, Jenna Smith, Phillip Johnson, Vince Vaughn, Katie Bitner, and Jenny Young attended the Georgia Recreation and Park Association Outdoor Section Workshop on April 16-17 at Dausett Trails (directed by alum, Ike English).
Megan Sletten completed her internship at Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department is Franklin, TN is an assistant teacher at Easter Seals Child Development Center McWhorter Family Children's Center in Nashville, TN.
Heather Wojtkun completed her internship at Bay Pines VA Medical Center.
Chelsi Hill is the Regional Coordinator for the Northern Illinois Special Recreation Association.
Robyn Fink programmanager@girlscoutsofswgeorgia.com is the Program Manager and Camp Director for the Girl Scouts of Southwest Georgia.
John Paul McNeal presented a poster at the UGA College of Education Graduate Research Conference held in Aderhold Hall on April 30th.
Angela Cobbs, Meri Cambre, Jaekwon Na, Megan Sletten, and Heather Wojtkun successfully completed their M.Ed. comprehensive written examinations.
Nathalie Guerin and Lynne Cory completed their Ph.D. degrees and were "hooded" by John Dattilo at the graduate ceremony and Nate Olive, Angela Cobbs, Heather Wojtkun, Meri Cambre, Carly Robinson, Teresa Pieper, and Megan Sletten received their masters degree on May 8th.
John Dattilo and Eric Gray completed a successful soccer season as volunteer coaches for 8-9 year-olds for the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services (ACCLS). This was the 11th season that John has been a volunteer soccer coach for ACCLS.
Brent Wolfe has accepted a tenure track position as an assistant professor at the University of Southern Mississippi.
