Congratulations Students

Virginia (Ginny) Merritt received the 2003 Edie Klein Leadership Award at the Spring RLST Recognition Picnic on April 24th. The award that includes a plaque and $500.00 is given to a RLST junior who demonstrates outstanding leadership skills.

Stephen Maynard's short story "Tailgate" has been accepted for publication in The Iconoclast, a literary magazine in New York edited by Phillip Wagner. Also, Stephen's short story "A Therapeutic Conversation with Abraham Lincoln" has been accepted for publication in the August issue of Tatlin's Tower, another literary magazine.

Nate Olive's article titled "A walk across Old Colorado" was published in the fall, 2002 edition of Tread Lines: The Colorado Trail Foundation Newsletter, 14-15. Also, Nate along with UGA students Sarah Janes and Billy Norse, are hiking 7,468 miles this summer to raise $30,000 for Welcome Home, a 501c3 non-profit organization committed to providing care for disadvantaged children in times of family crises. Finally, Nate and Sarah Janes are assessing recreational impact on designated trails and off-trail routes in Zion National Park this summer.

Brent Wolfe is a recent recipient of the 2003 UGA Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award and was recognized at the Honors Day ceremony on April 23rd.

Laurie Plank was recognized at Honors Day for being one of 50 UGA 2003 First Honor Graduates (earning a perfect 4.0 GPA).

Jaret Walton served as art director for "Shaping the Dream: Black History from a Poet's Eye" as a project for ELAN 7312, Teaching Poetry in Elementary and Middle School class. The project reviews over 100 poems on display on first floor Aderhold Hall.

Uttiyo Raychaudhuri participated in the 7th Asia Urbanization Conference in Athens March 1-3.

Lynne Cory was recognized for her assistance to the Qualitative Inquiry program when she helped with the Computer Assisted Data Analysis Software Workshop that hosted 65 participants from April 14-17th.

Elaine Bryan received a teaching assistantship this past spring semester from the Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies to teach PHED 3450 - Contemporary Studies in Sport.

Undergraduate students, Allison Toryk, Kevin Smith, Justin Sawyer, Kristin Reeves, Allison Mann, Lucy Jordan, Tracy Jones, Justin Johnson, Phoebe Harrington, Emerson Chew, Stephanie Boone, Berkeley Boone, Donald Bolton, Rachel Barattini, and Sheree Allgood and graduate students, Michael Rosenberg and Danielle Murphy attended the Spring 2003 College of Education Convocation and recently graduated. Also in attendance were Laura Russ who graduated Cum Laude and Kelli Reeves who graduated Magna Cum Laude.

The softball "Rec Team" including Candice Morgan, Chelsea Murphy, Drew Royle, Tim Griffith, Marc Hughes, Taylor Smith, Josh (Taylor's roommate), Becky Harbin, Katie Armstrong, Mary Lee Henderson, and Chad White had a successful spring season.

Five graduate students began course work spring semester. Jeff Turner (doctoral) who is currently teaching at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, GA and Matt Owens (Master's) who is currently a teacher at Ridge Creek in Dahlonega, GA have enrolled part-time and are advised by Mike Tarrant. Master's students, Andrew Lentini who comes to us from the state of Washington and Teresa Pieper who recently graduated from UGA with a degree in Journalism is advised by Dr. Powell and JaeKwon Na from Seoul, Korea is advised by John Dattilo.
