Brenda Arnold

  • Was recognized at the College of Education Award reception on May 2nd as one of the 12 College of Education staff members nominated for the annual Staff Award for Excellence.

Gwynn Powell

  • Published an article in the Research Notes column for Camping Magazine (2003) titled "A web of support: Ways to promote youth development in camp" 76(1), 64-66.
  • Served on a Panel Discussion of the GA School-Age Childcare Association Survey of School Age Programs in the Atlanta Metro Area for the School-Age Care Evaluation Conference held at the GA Center on January 27th.
  • Published the article titled "Difficulty and ability: Staff member perceptions of seasonal staff training" in the 2002 Research in Outdoor Education, 107-114 with co-authors Bixler, R. D., Switzer, D. M., & Hurtes, K. P.
  • Chaired the 2003 Camp Research Symposium held in conjunction with the American Camping Association National Conference in Denver, CO February 21st.
  • Published an article in the recent issue of World Leisure (2002) "Summer Camps in the United States: Legal Realities Versus Risk Perceptions." 44(4), 13-21 with Sarah Fields from the UGA Physical Education and Sport Studies Department.
  • Presented a session "Recruiting Today's College Student" at the Camp Twin Lakes Director Training Conference in Rutledge, GA on March 11.
  • Judged and emceed at the Future Problem Solving Program (FPSP) 29th Annual State Bowl Competition held April 25th in Aderhold Hall for 4th-12th grade student winners from Georgia. The Torrance Center for Creativity and Talent Development hosted 37 four-student teams and 70 individual competitors.
  • Published the 2003 article "Disgust sensitivity and perception of natural bodies of water and watercraft activities" in Psychological Reports, 93, 73-74 with Rob D. Bixler.
  • Met with the American Camping Association staff in Indianapolis on June 2-3 as part of her role as the chair of the National Conference Program Committee.
  • Is working with GA summer camps by leading team building sessions for PineAcres, and risk management and developmental stages sessions for Camp Meriweither with Director, Kat Shreve (B.S. '90) kshreve@girlgscoutsnwga.org and graduate student, Theresa Pieper.
  • Worked as the recreation leader for a two-week day camp in Crawfordsville, GA June 16-28th, a collaborative effort between the Family Connections Service, Taliaferro Public Schools, and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

Diane Samdahl

  • Will be teaching an honors seminar titled "Concepts of Leisure, Culture, and Simplicity on Wednesdays, 3:35 Ð 4:25 this fall semester.

Michael Tarrant

  • Supervised 63 students (twice as many as last year) in the Maymester 2003 Study Abroad Program in Christchurch, New Zealand that included natural resource history and conservation of the south island of New Zealand where students visit national parks and some of the Great Walks. http://www.uga.edu/oie/newzealand/
