Student and Faculty Collaborations

Meri Cambre, Angela Cobbs, Susan Dunn and Gwynn Powell made a presentation "Partnerships beyond the School Day" to members of the Partnership for Community Learners Design Team regarding their work with after-school and intersession at Chase Street and Gaines Elementary schools on January 23rd.

Angela Cobbs and Meri Cambre and students in Gwynn Powell's RLST 5430/7430 class led a morning of outdoor education activities at Sandy Creek Park for the Intersession Day Camp for Chase and Gaines Schools as part of a collaboration between Clarke County School District, Athens Clarke County Leisure Services, and UGA.

Meri Cambre presented "Recreational Approaches to Multicultural Awareness with Elementary Students" at the Georgia National Association of Multicultural Education at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain on behalf of Angela Cobbs and Gwynn Powell.

Paul Schla presented the on-line training program he and Gwynn Powell developed for Camp Twin Lakes in Rutledge, GA. Dan Mathews (M.Ed. '00) dan@camptwinlakes.org and Josh Sweat (B.S. '01) assisted with project development.

RLST undergraduates working with Gwynn Powell presented four abstracts at the Center for Undergraduate Research Symposium in April: Holly Holdsworth: Investigation of Summer Camp Websites in Light of Mission and Purpose; Lou Boestfleisch: Investigation of Children's Perceptions of Physical Activity and Links to Healthy Behavior; Carol Lindsey Woodall: Investigation of Motives Emphasized by Seasonal Employers in Attracting Staff; and Jenny Scott: Investigation of Knowledge, Behaviors and Intentions of Today's Youth Regarding Healthy Food Choices.

Kakali Bhattacharya, Michael Tarrant and Uttiyo Raychaudhuri presented "Land management planning tools Ð Designing a learner centered interactive environment" at the Southeastern Recreation Research Conference in Asheville, NC on February 19, 2003 and "Limits of acceptable change: A step by step interactive guide to a forestry problem applying theories of cognitive constructivism" at the Eastern Educators Research Association in Hilton Head, SC on February 28, 2003.

Nate Olive, Jeffrey Marion, and Michael Tarrant presented "Maintaining Physical and Recreational Integrity under a Dual Mandate: A Marriage of Trail Survey Methods" at the Southeastern Recreation Research Conference in Asheville, NC, February 19th.

Douglas Kleiber and John Dattilo published two data-based articles with co-authors David Loy (Ph.D. '01) loyd@mail.ecu.edu and Susan Hutchinson (Ph.D. '00) slh37@psu.edu in the 2001 Leisure Sciences 25(2-3), titled "Leisure as a Coping Resource: Variation in Coping with Traumatic Injury and Illness" and "Exploring the Influence of Leisure on Adjustment: Development of the Leisure and Spinal Cord Injury Adjustment Model."

RLST was well represented at the Society of Park and Recreation Educators Teaching Institute in Stillwater, OK January 30-31: Terri Phoenix served on a panel of "Current doctoral students transitioning to doctoral study;" Donna Jeffers-Brown, Terri Phoenix, and Gwynn Powell led a session "Benefits and challenges of service-learning;" Diane Samdahl and Corey Johnson (Ph.D. '02) johnsoncor@mail.ecu.edu led a session "Beyond our own backyard: Using leisure to teach about multiculturalism;" Gwynn Powell, Corey Johnson, Susan Hutchinson (Ph.D. '00) slh37@psu.edu and Tammie Stenger served on a panel "Transitioning into your first faculty position."
