Visiting Campus

Click here for basic information for visitors to UGA.

U.S. Air is the only airline that flies directly into the Athens airport. Other airlines fly into Hartsfield Airport in Atlanta. The AAA Airport Express provides transportation between Hartsfield Airport and Athens, and stops at various hotels in town as well as the Georgia Center on campus. Driving directions are fairly straightforward, though visitors should be aware that Atlanta traffic can be heavy during rush hour. All roads into Athens intersect the Highway 10 Loop which circles town; take Highway 10 to the southeast side of town and exit at College Station Road (exit #14).

The UGA Visitors Center is 1/4 mile west on College Station Road and offers a convenient first stop on campus. It is near the Ramsey Center where the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies is located (area F11 on this campus map).  There is parking at the Visitors Center and in a small pay-per-hour parking lot located in front of the Ramsey Center. Except for a few other pay lots, it is difficult to park on campus (see additional visitor parking).

Offices for the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies are on the third floor of the academic wing of the Ramsey Center. Enter the building through its main entrance; from that lobby go down the hall to the right.  A door to a stairway is located a short distance down on the right, and an elevator is located at the far end of that hall.  Take the stairs or elevator up one level to the third floor; turn left and follow that hallway to its end. The main Department office is 343 Ramsey.

The Campus Transit buses are free for everyone and circle through campus on a variety of routes. The Ramsey Center is served by the Orbit, East-West, Ag Hill, and East Campus Express bus routes. The Orbit route also circles through downtown Athens. Riding the bus is a good way to get around and provides an opportunity to view the rest of campus. Be sure to check the schedule since the buses provide reduced service in the evening and on days when classes are not in session.

A variety of hotels and motels are available in the Athens area and many are conveniently located near downtown and the UGA campus.  The Georgia Center Hotel is associated a conference center that also provides lodging on campus.

Moving to Athens

Athens offers plenty of student housing on campus and off campus.  Three newspapers list housing in the classified ads:  Athens Banner Herald, the Flagpole, and the campus newspaper Red and Black.  In addition, University Housing provides space for graduate students and their families in dormatories and apartment units on campus.

International students can find information about admissions at International Student Services and related information about moving to UGA at International Student Life Organization
