Seven outstanding graduate students at the University of Georgia have been awarded assistantships for 2008-09 through The Goizueta Foundation Graduate Scholars Fund. These recipients have excellent breadth and depth of experience in Latino educational issues and are committed to helping further CLASE’s mission at UGA and across the state.

Cori Jakubiak is a doctoral candidate in Language and Literacy Education. She holds an MA in TESOL, and her dissertation research focuses on the social phenomenon of English language “voluntourism,” or short-term, volunteer English language teaching, in the Global South. A former middle school language arts and foreign language teacher in the Michigan Public Schools, Cori currently works as a part-time ESOL instructor in the Morgan County School District of Madison, GA. |

Albert Jimenez is a doctoral student in EPIT in the Research, Evaluation, Measurement and Statistics program. Bert was previously a math teacher at Clarke Central High School, and is working with CLASE’s “Five Standards for Effective Pedagogy” training with Forsyth County teachers. |

William Mira is a MA/PhD student in educational psychology in the Applied Cognition and Development program. Of Salvadoran descent, William’s research interests include exploring the factors that influence the overall efficacy of tutoring/mentoring programs, specifically for Latino youth. William received a BA from the University of Virginia in Anthropology and is currently helping to coordinate the CLASE tutoring program at Whitehead Elementary. |

Originally from Bolivia, Dalcy Moreno holds a BA in Spanish from Georgia College & State University, and a Masters degree in Language and Literacy Education specializing in Foreign Language Instruction from UGA. She has previously taught high school Spanish and ESOL. She is also a recipient of the Teachers for English Language Learners (TELL) scholarship within the Department of Education at UGA. With CLASE, she has helped coordinate the after-school tutoring program for ELL learners at Fowler Elementary School in Athens, GA. Currently she is a student in the EDS program within Educational Administration and Policy. |

Karin Stubenbaum is a masters student in Public Health and in her first year with CLASE. She holds a bachelors degree in Spanish from UGA and a degree in midwifery from Switzerland where she was born and raised. For the past 4 years, Karin has worked as a Family Engagement Specialist at an elementary school in Athens. |

Kevin Terry is a masters student in International Policy at UGA’s School of Public and International Affairs. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota. Kevin spent the bulk of his non-academic career at Minnesota conducting outreach, mentoring, and advocating for enhanced educational opportunities for Latino youth. |
