Dr. Corey Johnson has received a College of Education Early Career Grant for fall Semester 2007
“What a man ought to be, he is far from”:
Exploring Collective Meanings of Masculinity & Race in Media
Parents, educators, researchers and policy makers have sought to identify the
root causes of violence by looking at three separate, but overlapping areas:
access to handguns, parental influence and authority; and the media's
influence on young people. Although the causes and explanations of violence
are complex and multi-layered, researchers have clearly articulated a link
between media consumption by young people with their understandings of
gender, race, sex, and violence. Given that leisure has been identified as a
central developmental context for young men; and since they consume large
quantities of media in their free time, the purpose of Dr. Johnson's study
is to use collective memory work to explore how media influence the
intersecting social identities of masculinity and race for young men.

Safer Spaces: Creating a more supportive rehabilitation environment for gay, transgendered and questioning youth

Dr. Corey Johnson & Dr. Edward Delgado-Romero have received a new grant (January 2007) for:

Safer Spaces: Creating a more supportive rehabilitation environment for gay, transgendered and questioning youth is collaboration between faculty in Recreation and Leisure Studies, Counseling Psychology and the Augusta Youth Detention Center Campus, centered on assessing and meeting the needs of staff and adjudicated youth in relation to gay identity development. Given the predominantly African American makeup of YDC youth, the intersection of racial identity development will also be addressed. Dr. Johnson (Recreation and Leisure Studies) and Dr. Delgado-Romero (Counseling-Psychology) will work with two Counseling-Psychology doctoral students to develop a resource program to address the needs of LGBT  and question youth and also involve graduate students from a RLST 7130 (Experiential Education) to develop and implement social justice/cultural competency training for the staff of the facility. This project aims to meet an expressed need of the State agency while at the same time creating opportunities for service, outreach, service-learning, and research.
