Mentoring Training Sessions
 
The preliminary mentoring training sessions were held during  June 2001 at Central Georgia Technical College and Gwinnett Technical College.  Additional training sessions will be held in fall 2001 and spring 2002. Information about upcoming training sessions will be posted to this site as it becomes available.

Workshop Overview

  Welcome and Introductions

The Mentoring Process

For the purpose of this project, mentoring is defined as pairing experienced professionals
with new professional to help them learn the ropes, understand their role within the functional area, establish collegial relationships around the state, and assist their career development.
Specific areas addressed:
  • Understanding what mentoring is and what mentoring is not
  • Discussion of what mentees want from mentors and the mentoring relationship
  • Rewards of serving as a mentor to the mentor, mentee, and organization
  • Qualities of a good mentor
  • Factors related to establishing successful mentoring relationships
  • How to begin, maintain, and end a mentoring relationship
  • Potential mentoring activities 
  • Discussion of participant concerns about being a mentor
  Ethical Guidelines
Discussion of ethical issues related to mentoring (e.g., sexual harassment, confidentiality, cross-cultural/cross-generational/cross-gender relationships).  Participants as a group will develop ethical guidelines for the DTAE mentoring process.

Establishing a Mentoring Plan
Participants will spend time working In small groups to set up a plan for beginning and maintaining the mentoring relationship. Small group members will establish a method of providing each other support as mentors during the coming year.

Report out & Wrap-up
