Deferments
are available if you are:
1. In school at
least half-time at an eligible school or graduate fellowship
program approved by the
US Department of Education.
2. In a rehabilitation training program.
3. Unemployed (for up to three years).
4. Experiencing economic hardship (for up to three years).
5. In the US Armed Forces, Public Health Service, or NOAA.
6. A full-time paid volunteer.
These
deferments apply to all Direct Loans. Private loans
may be different and you should
consult your borrower.
Forbearance may be available if you
are:
1.
In poor health or other acceptable reasons and unable to make loan
payments,
and do not meet a deferment condition.
2. Serving in a medical or dental internship or residency.
3. Currently
making payments equal to or greater than 20% of your monthly
gross income (for up to
three years).
