A common misconception about programming is that food is
the only way to attract an
audience. However, not all programs have to have an elaborate pizza
buffet or an all-you-can-eat salad bar. Commonly, funds are made available
for programming. This money can be used for a variety of options -
not just snacks.
Avoid the "food trap" and consider some alternative ways of
stretching your programming dollars...
- Be a
wise shopper - Shop around and find the best prices and deals.
You can get more for your dollar.
- Buddy up! - Consider teaming up with a fellow staff member and
splitting the cost...and the responsibilities.
- The Nose Knows - The power of smell can draw
even the toughest of residents out of their rooms. Try popping a
few bags of popcorn before the program. Popcorn is cheap, can be
purchased in mass quantities, and the smell...well, when was the last
time you passed up popcorn at the movies?
- BYOB - Make the program a Bring Your Own Bag...of
something. Pool together and have everyone bring their favorite
snack or drink. You would be amazed at the variety of items you
will receive!
- Pass
the Collection Plate - If your residents are really
excited about having a pizza party, ask for donations. I am not
talking about their life savings but maybe just a dollar or $0.50.
This would definitely cut down on the initial money you request.
Also, if residents have something invested in the program, they will
likely attend.
- Don't
Be Shy - Don't be shy in asking local merchants for donations in
return for free publicity. You could receive free food or other
merchandise. You may even receive coupons and gift
certificates. Use these to your advantage by drawing for a door
prize at the event. Residents are just as excited about winning
food and gifts as they are when those items are already provided for
them.
