Incoming students at The
University of Georgia have the option of living on or
off campus during their enrollment. What follows is general introductory
information for each of these options.
On-Campus Living
With an applicant's letter of acceptance, the UGA Office of Undergraduate Admissions sends various information to prospective students. These documents include information on possible on-campus housing options, open to undergraduate students enrolled in at least twelve credit hours and graduate students taking a minimum of six hours. On campus housing benefits students by providing multiple opportunities for student leadership and convenient involvement in the campus community. From organized social and educational programs to simply gathering in a lounge to study or socialize, there is never a dull moment for students residing in campus housing.
Housing at The University of Georgia revolves around six residential communities, each with its own strengths. Many first-year students request housing in the Colonial Area Residence Halls and enjoy the breadth of opportunity to meet new people found in large high-rise buildings. Each of these buildings provides laundry and vending facilities for use by the residents of the halls. First, the Brumby Community is a ten-story building housing approximately 1000 female students. Like the other halls, Brumby has various lounge space used for studying and programs sponsored by the hall staff. Next, the Russell Community is also a ten-story high-rise. This building, however, is home to both men and women, separated by floors. It too has lounges throughout the building in addition to a computer lab in the lobby. Creswell Hall is the third ten-story building in the UGA housing system. It houses approximately 1000 men and women, again separated by floors, in addition to various lounges and study spaces throughout the community. Unique to Creswell is its location adjoining Bolton Dining Hall. These three high-rises are all air-conditioned and located near Bolton Dining Hall, Legion Field and Pool, outdoor tennis and basketball courts, and the West Campus Parking Deck.
In addition to the Colonial Area, UGA Housing features the Georgian Area
Residence Halls. These buildings are located throughout much of campus and
are home to a population diverse in age. Like those halls in the Colonial
Area, these buildings also include lounge and study space as well as laundry and
vending facilities utilized by residents. First, the Hill Community
consists of six air-conditioned buildings -- one nine-story high-rise and five
four-story buildings. This community provides opportunity for each of all
female, all male, or coeducational living. Located between North and South
Campus, this community is near the Tate Student Center, Legion Field and Pool,
and Sanford Stadium. Also in the Georgian Area, the Myers Community offers
housing in both all female and coeducational halls. These buildings are
near to Snelling Dining Hall and surround the Myers Quadrangle, an area popular
for social and athletic gatherings throughout the year. Finally, the Reed
Community provides all female, all male, or coeducational housing options.
Three of these four buildings are open year-round to serve students needing
housing over academic breaks and throughout the summer. Like the Myers
Quadrange, the Reed Quad also offers space for lounging and/or social activities
for residents of this community.
Clearly, The University of Georgia Housing Department offers a wide variety of options for on-campus living. Students in these residence halls have many opportunities to get involved in the campus community through leadership positions, organizational participation, athletic activities, and other events throughout the year. Staff in the residence halls include undergraduates, graduates, and professional employees. Each of these individuals works to maintain proper functioning within these buildings and hope to serve the residents in the halls. Governing policies exist in all the halls to insure the positive living experience for those students who choose to live in these residential communities.
