KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!

As with anything, it is important to know your rights.  The Department of University Housing at the University of Georgia has come up with the following list of rights for roommates.  These can be used by any set of  roommates.  Whether in a residence hall or an apartment, it is important that you share a mutual respect for one another.  These rights can be used daily, not only when a conflict arises.

Roommate Bill of Rights
1.
The right to live in a clean building.
2.
The right to expect that a roommate will respect one’s personal belongings.
3.
The right to a redress of grievances.  Housing staff is available to assist in resolving conflicts.
4.
The right to read and study without undue interference in one’s room.  Unreasonable noise and other distractions inhibit the exercise of this right.
5.
The right to sleep without undue disturbance from noise, roommate's guests, etc.
6.
The right to free access to one’s room and facilities without pressure from a roommate.
7.
The right to personal privacy.
8.
The right to be free from fear or intimidation and physical or emotional harm.
9.
The right to have guests during visitation hours with the expectation that guests are to respect the rights of the host’s/hostess’s roommate and other hall residents.
 10.
The right to expect reasonable cooperation in the use of the room telephone.
