Tips on Staying Safe on
Campus
Self protection is more than carrying a spray to ward off attackers; it is
the way you think, act and walk. Self protection in a study in options:
whether to reduce risks, talk, run or fight.
- NEVER walk alone. Walk with a friend whenever possible, or call
UGA's Campus Escort Service at 542-2000.
- Don't let your guard down simply because it's daytime! Be aware
of your surroundings all the time!
- Share your class and activity schedule with your roommate and/or
friends, creating a "buddy system."
- Survey the campus, academic buildings, residence halls and other
facilities while classes are in session. Then revisit the same areas
after dark (don't go alone!) to determine whether building access, walkways
and parking lots are securely lit and patrolled. Know where the campus
call-boxes are. They are designated by a bright blue light that places a
direct call to the UGA police.
- Use sprays and self-defense tactics, but only when
absolutely necessary. Be aware that sometimes these tactics anger the
attacker - so please use with caution.
- Trust your instincts. Listen to that "little
voice" inside you. If you are feeling uncomfortable in a situation, try
as quickly as possible to remove yourself from the environment, whether you
are in an "unsafe" area or on a date. If you do find yourself placed in
a potential rape or assault situation, say "NO" loud and clear. Put your
hands up in front of you in a "stop" position.
