Extra! Extra!
Extra!
(Here are some EXTRAS... to
think about!)
- What can be
recycled? Does your apartment have recycling
facilities?
If not, you can contact Athens-Clarke County Recycling Division at
613-3512.
- What are the apartment
rules and regulations?
- Emergency
protocol? Emergency maintenance?
- Damage to
apartment? As a resident, most complexes will hold their occupants
responsible for any damage to the apartment due to negligence or
carelessness.
- What are the
conduct expectations (i.e.... noise, visitors,
liability)?
- What type of trash
disposal is provided, if any?
- How much written notice
must you give to terminate the lease? Most facilities will
require a 30 day written notice before you plan to move out.
- Inspections?
Does the management reserve the right to inspect the leased premises and
conduct inspections?
- Notice how well the
landlord maintains the property. Most often it is beneficial to
establish a positive landlord/tenant relationship and know that there
is professional and caring staff to help you with your needs.
- Some apartments may be
furnished or provide furnishings for an increase in rent. Be sure
and compare your costs (buying, renting, renting from the landlord) before
committing. Garage sales, flea markets, and used furniture stores are
also great places to find bargains!
- Some complexes provide
study areas, but most do not. Be sure to designate space within
your apartment for hitting the books!
- If you want to cut down
on rent and monthly costs, having a roommate can help. Two or
three bedroom apartments are usually lower in cost -- single apartments tend
to be premium and in higher demand.
- Some complexes provide
social programs and/or community areas. If meeting the people
around you is important, check with the landlord and see if any opportunities
such as these exist.
- Most landlords require a
security deposit. This pays for any damage to the apartment
caused by you while you are living there.
- Make sure you inspect the
apartment before moving in and note any pre-existing damages. Get the
landlord to sign any inventory or inspection sheet you fill out. This
will help avoid disagreement about the refunding of your security
deposit.
