Jodi L. Carlton, Class of 2000: I feel that the students in the Community Counseling program are well chosen, which strengthens the integrity of the program. The fact that the program is CACREP accredited is very helpful in knowing that the program meets classroom/ client contact requirements for many state licensing boards. My internship site, Northeast GA Community Service Board has been a wonderful place to getting training in many aspects of counseling, including individual therapy, group therapy, medication monitoring, and crisis intervention. I feel well prepared to enter the workforce when I graduate. Additionally, I feel that this program has prepared me to gain entry into a doctoral level program should I decide to go that route.
C. Meade Morris Conley, Class of 2000: The community counseling program and my intern/practicum experience with the JCAP Team (Juvenile Counseling and Assessment Program) provided me with the necessary exposure to develop a strong foundation of theory and skills. However, the most invaluable part of this program was the cohort experience with my other peers and the support and “practical” experiences that generated from these personal, as well as professional, friendships. All of the individuals I shared my graduate experience with will be precious resources for future professional development and encouragement. If you have questions or general inquiries I will be happy to talk with you. Please contact me in the counseling doctoral program at Georgia State University beginning in the fall of 2000. Best wishes!!
Amanda Lin, NCC, Class of 1995: The opportunity to use skills learned in class and apply them in my internship is one of the outstanding aspects of the Community Counseling program.
Eric Pryzbylek, Class of 2000: This program has done a wonderful job of preparing me for a career in counseling. One benefit is the amount of supervision I have received.
Lee Smith, Class of 2000: The preparation this program has given me, both personally and professionally, makes me very confident in my abilities as a clinician. I would recommend this program highly to anyone interested in meeting the challenge of becoming a helper.
Trés Stefurak, Class of 2000: The program’s commitment to a small cohort and to the incorporation of both empirical and clinical subject matter distinguish GA from any other program I originally sought admission to. Consequentially, I value the immense personal and professional growth I have derived from my experience here.
Clare Underwood, Class of 2001: As a student in the Community Counseling program I have received not only guidance from the program and from my practicum site, Northeast GA CSB, on how to become and effective counselor, but additionally, I have gained greater insight into myself – my beliefs and my values. This knowledge is important for all beginning counselors.
Chinwé Uwah, Class of 2000: During the interview process, I was initially drawn to the warm, laid-back, non-competitive atmosphere. Faculty was then, and continued to be supportive of our efforts. Having almost completed my degree requirements, I feel that the program has assisted me in developing the counseling skills that can be transferable to a wide variety of settings.
Laurie A. Wilburn, LPC, Class of 1994: The thing I like best about the program was that while completing our internships we were also taking classes. This provided us with a wonderful opportunity to bring real-life examples to class for discussion. We were able to learn from the experiences of others in our program as well as gain valuable supervision for our own cases.
