Full Name: Nikki Laird Undergraduate Institution: Duke University Master’s Institution: University of Texas at Austin Master’s Degree: Higher Education Administration (with a concentration Student Personnel Services) Assistantship or Job: Doctoral Intern for the Center for Leadership and Service, working with the IMPACT (formerly known as Alternative Spring Break) program Why did you choose UGA’s College Student Affairs Administration (CSAA) program? I was looking for a great experience with an engaging cohort and challenging, yet supportive, faculty with a wide variety of interests. I also wanted a unique and enriching assistantship experience where I would be working directly with undergraduate students. In addition, I have always felt most comfortable at large state institutions with successful Division I athletics programs. Luckily, I found all of those things at UGA and in the CSAA program! Student Affairs Interest/Research Interest: I have so many! Professionally, I’m most interested in effective recruitment, training, and evaluation of professional and paraprofessional staff on college campuses—particularly in residence life—and in leadership development through engagement in service and commitment to social change. In terms of research, I am fascinated by the intersections of leadership development and identity development (especially LGBT identity development), college students who are housing distressed, predicting efficacy of paraprofessional staff in student affairs, the First Year Experience, and student attitudes toward social justice. |
