Academic Programs - College Student Affairs Administration

The primary purpose of the College Student Affairs Administration preparation program is to aid graduate students in acquiring the skills and competencies necessary to apply human development, interpersonal facilitation, group leadership, assessment, and administrative principles to work with college students in higher education organizations. The specific focus of the program is on student learning and development, which is concerned with both students’ learning and personal growth while they are in college. Coursework includes foundations of student affairs, student development theories, helping skills, group interventions, research methods, campus environments, multicultural practice, legal issues in student affairs, administrative practices, and assessment and evaluation.  All students complete both a practicum and an internship, and typically all students hold graduate assistantships in student affairs and related areas.  Graduates work in such settings as residence halls, student activities programs, career services centers, admissions offices, international student offices, student conduct, intercultural student services, fraternity/sorority life programs, community service programs, learning assistance centers, new student orientation, and academic advising centers.

Students

A limited number of students enroll each year in the CSAA Program; students go through the program in a cohort of approximately 20 students. The average age of the current students in the program is about 24; in general, half enroll directly after their undergraduate experience, while the other half has worked in the field. The College Student Affairs Administration program is committed to recruiting students representing different societal groups, geographical regions, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Students come from regions throughout the United States and represent a diverse background of experiences.
