Welcome to Our Centennial Website

In 2008, the College of Education celebrates 100 years of preparing teachers, counselors, administrators, college professors, school psychologists and professionals in the allied health fields. During its first century, our College has strived for excellence in each of these fields, with early leaders setting the standard for a tradition of creative thinking that continues today.

As Georgia’s flagship teaching college, our Framework for Accomplished Teaching led to curriculum changes teacher education programs across the state, and in 2006, was adopted as the definition of teaching in Georgia by the Georgia Department of Education, Professional Standards Commission and University System of Georgia Board of Regents.

Today, more than 230 faculty members teach nearly 5,000 students in more than 50 fields of study relating to education and health. Nationally recognized research and initiatives that enhance school improvement, student achievement and leadership development in numerous education and health-related disciplines continue to be hallmarks of our College.

To mark this important milestone in our College’s history, we have developed this Centennial website which features the biographies of the College’s 14 deans, and a myriad of stories, features and photos from over the past 100 years. While the site has been officially launched, it is in ongoing development and we invite you to not only check back for new features, but also to participate by sending us your memories connected to the College.

We wish to thank Bob Jerrolds, professor emeritus and author of The History of the College of Education, The University of Georgia, from which most of the written material on this website originated and Steven Brown, director of The Hargrett Rare Books & Manuscript Library / University of Georgia Libraries for his assistance in obtaining many of the historic photos.
