1891

  • Georgia Legislature authorizes the State Normal School of Athens

1904

  • First University of Georgia Summer School (for teacher training) held

1908

  • UGA’s first College of Education authorized (June 13)

1913

  • Peabody Hall dedicated as home to School of Education (June 12)

1919

  • First women admitted to UGA in Peabody School of Education and College of Agriculture's Department of Home Economics.

1922

  • First correspondence course at UGA offered by School of Education.

1932

  • UGA College of Education formed by merger with Georgia State Teacher’s College (formerly the State Normal School in Athens) and Georgia State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts.
  • First Master of Arts in Education degree granted.

1940

  • First Doctor of Philosophy degrees granted at UGA (one in history, two in education)

1943

  • First B.S. degrees offered in Art and Music Education in Georgia.
  • Georgia Legislature commissions development of a Vocational Education Program.

1945

  • First Summer Workshops conducted off campus throughout Georgia.

1947

  • First program in educational counseling at UGA created.

1948

  • First Doctor of Education degree granted at UGA
    (to future dean Joe Williams)

1953

  • First program of speech correction at UGA created.

1954

  • National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education

1955

  • First UGA Speech and Hearing Clinic established.
    (In Waddel Hall.)

1956

  • First woman to earn a doctorate at UGA is Bernice Cooper. (Ed.D. in Elementary Education)

1957

  • Georgia Center for Continuing Education opens.

1961

  • College moves across the street to Baldwin Hall.
  • First African-American accepted into College of Education is Mary Frances Early.

1962

  • First African American to graduate from UGA is Mary Frances Early. (M.A. in Music Education)

1963

  • First doctoral program in mathematics education at UGA created.

1969

  • Conference of Children’s Literature and Georgia Book Awards launched.
  • First programs approved to prepare directors of libraries, guidance, pupil personnel services.
  • First state regional Mental Retardation Center established at UGA (at Rivers Crossing)

1971

  • College moves into Aderhold Hall on South Campus.

1981

  • First female Dean of Education (Kathryn Blake).

1993

  • First college at UGA to adopt a Multicultural Mission Statement.

1996

  • New 430,000 square-foot Ramsey Student Center opens (home to departments of exercise science, physical education and sport studies, health promotion and behavior)

1997

  • River’s Crossing building renovated (new home for departments of adult education, educational leadership and occupational studies)

1999

  • First African-American dean at UGA (Louis A. Castenell Jr.)

2002

  • Reorganization: 19 departments merged to 9 current departments.

2003

  • First African-American female department head at UGA (Mary Atwater, department of mathematics and science education)

2008

  • College celebrates its centennial (June 13).
