The
State University of São Paulo (UNESP) is the state's
largest educational institution offering approximately
100 undergraduate and 200 graduate degrees. It has a
total of 24 campuses, spread throughout the state serving
more than 35 thousand students. The Bauru campus is located
at the city of Bauru a town of approximately 300,000.
It is both a commercial center, and a college town, hosting
a number of other private and public universities. Compared
to the larger cities in Brazil, Bauru represents a more
authentic vision of typical Brazilian life. Much like
college towns in the United States, Bauru is populated
by a younger population. It boasts a vibrant nightlife
as well as plenty of sport-related activities. The city
of Brotas, about 1 hour from Bauru, is known as Brazil's
capital for eco-tourism. Students often travel to Brotas
for white-water rafting, canoeing, rappelling, and horseback
riding. To

At
the Applied Information Technology Lab (LTIA) researchers
and professors in computer science, mathematics, and
education engage in community-based
technology integration efforts at K-12 schools in the Bauru region. These
projects actively involve undergraduate students at the
university, who work in all aspect of technology integration:
through the development of software, design, or in implementation
in cooperation with local teachers and school principals. The STEPE project has been a reference throughout the country and lead to the development of Microsoft's national Aluno Monitor Project.
The LTIA has established strong partnerships with the
local community and schools, along with corporations
such as IBM, Microsoft, and 3COM. At UNESP you will be able to get involved in other projects, including Wireless applications, PDA use in medical/educational contexts, Flash-based learning objects (see the national RIVED program), and many others. To the right, students
