The Federal
University of Ceará (Universidade Federal
do Ceará, UFC) is located in the city of Fortaleza,
the state capital. Though most people are family with
São Paulo (the economic center of Brazil) and
Rio de Janeiro, the northeastern part of the country
is known for having some of the most friendly and welcoming
people in the country. Fortaleza
is well known as one of the most beautiful cities in
Brazil, blessed by a coastline with fantastic beaches
and warm weather throughout the year. Though it is located
in the northeastern part of the country, Fortaleza is
a fairly large city, with a population of approximately
2 million. To

UFC
is a large university, and hosts a medical school. It
offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate degree
programs, and its faculty has substantial experience
with the use of technology in education. It
hosts UFC-Virtual a pioneering center dedicated to the
study and diffusion
of distance education programs. UFC-Virtual has established
partnerships with the state of Ceará, a variety
of institutions in Brazil (including UNESP) and abroad
(including UGA, Memorial University of Canada, Harvard
Medical School), and business partnerships, such as the
Erricson corporation. Students in the college of education
are highly involved with their communities and schools.
Many undergraduate and most graduate students work weekly
in K-12 classroom promoting grassroots project focusing
on improving pedagogy, promoting education reform, and
contributing to the integration of technology into the
classroom. At UFC you can also get involved in development projects, such as the nationwide RIVED project focusing on learning objects, distance education environments, and mobile applications.
