This is
not a traditional study abroad program! It will provide
you with an
immersive experience in language and culture, but will also provide
you valuable skills you can use towards changing your life
and the
life of others. You will participate in some courses which will help you think about and develop educational technologies. You will also be working extensively with teachers and schools. Moreover, you will be in close contact with development laboratories in both UFC and UNESP. For those more interested in technical applications, both are model labs working in the development of high end applications in distance education environments, wireless applications, learning objects using a variety of software technologies (.NET, Flash, Flex, Coldfusion, Java, etc). Others less interested in technical applications will be working with instructional design, pedagogical support, and other essential issues.
Below you
will see a typical schedule for a student selected to participate
in the exchange program. The courses
in yellow (language) are generally required
but might be waived depending
on your level of proficiency with
either Portuguese or Spanish. Courses
in
blue
are
mandatory. The names of the courses will be different
at your institution, and the dates are approximate. Details

Language
courses
Before you begin your exchange, we will work with
you in assessing
your Portuguese language skills. If language training
in Portuguese is needed, you will be able to take language
courses at your local institution. During this process,
you will be partnered with students in Brazil to help you
learn
the language and exchange ideas. Think Portuguese is not the ideal language to learn? Consider this:
We do have a Brazilian population here in Cobb and certain schools have a very high number of Portuguese speaking students. I would encourage your education majors to study Portuguese or Spanish as these languages represent the majority of our international students.

Program
courses
| Educational
Technologies – This introductory course
will explore technology and its educational applications
for pre-service teachers, with an emphasis on integrating
computer tools into classroom instruction. Students
will focus on computer-based educational applications
in the areas of instruction, text and data processing,
multimedia, and telecommunications. You should take
this course before you begin the exchange program. |
| At UGA
- EDIT 2000, Introduction to computers for teachers |

The remaining
courses (Fall 2005) will have important and
constant online components where students
from all four institutions will cooperate and exchange ideas.
We will make use of online systems and video-conferencing
throughout the classes. The
courses are flexible and will be tailored to fit your interests:
| Design
and Development Tools - Students will learn
a variety of tools appropriate for computer-based development.
These include graphics, media, and software development
tools. Students will be required to write a contract
for the specific tools and curriculum materials they
choose to learn. Students will work independently learning
computer-based tools. In addition, scheduled class
time will allow students to self select workshops,
collaborate with peers, and with assistance from instructors.
This class will employ a mixture of structured learning
and independent learning experiences at the discretion
of the student. Ultimate performance in the class will
be evaluated using a rubric that focuses on the major
application project that students construct independently. |

| Field-Based
Theory and Practice of Technology Integration – Students
in this class will analyze issues in technology integration
in the K-12 environment. Specifically, students will
perform needs analyses, design and develop curriculum
materials and lesson plans based on these needs, and
learn to evaluate their own work as well as providing
peer feedback to others. This course will require students
to partner with practicing K-12 teachers as apprentices,
following a service-learning format. This partnership
will develop technology solutions to challenges in
adapting to diversity, learning styles, bridging the
digital divide, and other relevant issues. Inherent
in this course is the intent to develop lasting solutions
and strategies that will have immediate as well as
long term pedagogical impacts on teaching practice. |

| Multicultural
Technology Integration Seminar – Students
from different countries will meet through an online
forum using synchronous or asynchronous technologies
to share and reflect on their experiences on technology
integration around the world. This course will be taught
collaboratively by a number of guest instructors from
universities around the world, who will bring global
comparative perspectives to the classroom. Students
will be required to compose an essay on a topic related
to their experiences in the classroom, including: multicultural
education, technology integration, comparative education,
etc. These essays will then be compiled into an online
book, which will be used as a text for future iterations
of the courses that comprise the certificate. Students
will have opportunities to collaborate in modifying
or appending previous book chapters. |
