Autism Assessment, Screening, and Diagnosis

We are interested in examining the validity and usefulness of various measures designed to identify and diagnose individuals with autism spectrum disorders. Representative publications and projects in this area appear below.

Early screening and detection of autism spectrum disorders

Through collaboration with the Carolina Autism Resource and Evaluation (CARE) Center in Columbia, South Carolina, we have begun research to compare different screening instruments designed to detect autism spectrum disorders in young children. The two-year research project will utilize web-based video technology (Video Analysis Tool) to confirm reliability of diagnosis. The project is funded by the Organization for Autism Research.

Psychological Assessment of Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Campbell is writing a text on the psychological assessment of individuals with autism spectrum disorders entitled, “Psychological assessment and treatment of children with autism spectrum disorders: An integrated action guide to diagnosis, treatment, and educational planning.” The book will be published by Wiley (Psychological assessment book cover).

Dr. Guy (Marcus Autism Center), Dr. Pakula (Marcus Autism Center), and Dr. Campbell are collaborating on research examining children with ASD’s performance on social cognitive measures appearing in the NEPSY-II battery. Preliminary findings will be presented at the annual APA Conference in August 2010.
