New Course Proposal Checklist
Preparing Course Proposals
- New Course Proposal forms are online via the CAPA system. Fill in fields 1-15 as required.
- New Course Proposals must include a response to field #15 specifying the following two items as called for by the University of Georgia Course Syllabi Policy:
- Course Objectives or Learning Outcomes. Please be specific.
(When typing in the Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes box, please be sure to hit the return button at the end of each line. The lines in this box do not wrap and if there is not a hard return after each line, the line runs off the page and is not readable on the screen or when the course is printed.)
- Topical Outline
(When typing in the Topical Outline box, please be sure to hit the return button at the end of each line. The lines in this box do not wrap and if there is not a hard return after each line, the line runs off the page and is not readable on the screen or when the course is printed.)
- New courses must provide a rationale for why the new course is needed. This information should be typed in the comments box at the end.
(When reviewing a course after it has been forwarded, you must use the CAPA Browse Menu. If you view the course from the Course Initiator Menu, the information you typed in the comments box will not be visible. However, it will show when you browse and print from the CAPA Browse Menu. Also, the lines in the comments box should wrap but check to be sure it is working correctly. If it not wrapping, go back and hit the return button after each line.)
- Course Duplication Issues
- The department must verify the course is not a duplication or in competition with another course/program offered by another unit on campus. This information should be typed in the comments box at the end.
-
If there is a potential conflict, solicit review/comments from potential conflicting units in order to facilitate approval of the course/program (letter from Department Head to Associate Dean for Academic Affairs). Send letter to be attached to the CAPA form to Carolyn Taylor, College Curriculum Office, G2D Aderhold Hall.
Submitting Course Proposals
- The course proposal is forwarded, via CAPA, to the College Curriculum Office for review by the Senate Curriculum Committee. (Before forwarding a proposal to the Curriculum Committee for review, check the relevant information in the comments box. Changes can be made in this box before you forward the proposal, but changes cannot be made in the comments box after the proposal has been forwarded.)
- The proposal will be checked for adherence to what is required as stated under "Preparing Course Proposals" and will be returned if these areas are not completed.
- If the proposal is approved at the College level, it is forwarded to either the Graduate School or the University Curriculum Office by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs who is responsible for communicating Curriculum Committee requests.
- If the proposal is not approved, it is sent back, via CAPA, to the department with Committee comments as to why it was returned.
- Any changes requested must be returned to the College/Dean, via CAPA, and may be brought to the Committee for re-review
See Senate Bylaws for this committee
