COE Faculty Research Funding - Application & Review Process
All applications for funding must originate in the department, and sign-offs will be required at the department level prior to consideration by the College of Education Research Advisory Committee. Applications should be submitted to the Associate Dean for Research, Technology, and External Affairs. Please use the attached cover sheets for your proposal.
A final report outlining the outcomes of the work supported here will be required within one calendar year of the end date for the award.
COE Research Funding Program Guidelines
These guidelines are for the Faculty Grant Development Program, the Early Career Faculty Grant Program, the Faculty Research Leave Program, and the Support for Large Collaborative Grant Development Program.
Eligibility for Grants
Only one proposal may be submitted by an individual per funding cycle. If appropriate, proposals may be submitted jointly by more than one individual, but no individual may serve as proposer on more than one project, whether joint or single. Continuation proposals will be considered but need to be justified.
A strong priority is placed in this program on the "seed money" concept and on developing the research initiatives of new and the most junior faculty members.
Uses of Grant Funds
Grants for this program are intended to support the development of new programs of research and creative scholarship. They are not a source of continuing support for an ongoing program, nor should they be viewed as an alternative source of funds for programs already developed to a level which normally would justify support from external agencies. They should not provide "matching" funds, where such funds are required as part of an external proposal, or travel funds to attend professional meetings; support for these items is provided by the college, or in special cases, through the Office of the Vice President for Research.
COE Faculty Research Grants will provide support for the following categories of expenditure:
1. General expenses of research, such as supplies, materials, services, etc., which are essential to the project.
2. Equipment essential to the research being proposed. Equipment requests should relate to a particular project, even though the equipment will be used beyond its conclusion.
3. Travel costs, including subsistence, which are essential for the conduct of the research.
4. Salary release for proposers may be requested only for those on nine-month appointments and only where the salary support will provide relief from a significant teaching commitment.
5. Graduate research assistants as support staff for faculty research. (Grants are not intended to support students' thesis or dissertation research. Proposals requesting graduate-student stipends should make clear the role played by the student in the faculty member's research program.)
6. Faculty may only receive funding for one proposal to the COE Faculty Research Funding Programs in a 3-year period.
7. Individuals who do not use funds allocated to them during the semester for which they applied, must return the unused funds and they will have to reapply for funding for future semesters.
