COE Outstanding Undergraduate Academic Advisor Award

 

Purpose and Description


Title:

COE Outstanding Undergraduate Academic Advisor

   
Purpose: The College of Education Outstanding Undergraduate Academic Advisor Award was established in 2004. This award recognizes excellence in undergraduate academic advising in the College of Education. One award will be given to a tenured/tenure-track faculty member and one to a staff member or other non-tenure-track person who serves as an academic advisor/mentor. COE awardees are submitted for consideration for the UGA Outstanding Undergraduate Academic Advisor Award.
   
Deadlines: All nominations should be submitted to the Office of the Associate Dean for Research by noon on October 15 each year. Should this date fall on a weekend or holiday, nominations should be submitted the next working day.
   
Eligibility: All undergraduate academic advisors (e.g., graduate assistants, staff members, tenured/tenured-track or non-tenure/career-track faculty members) are eligible. Recipients will be recognized at the COE spring awards ceremony. Current members of the Faculty Senate Awards Committee are not eligible.
   
Recognition: The recipients of the award receive a professional development award (pending funds available) and a plaque.

Application Procedures and Documentation


It will be the responsibility of the nominators to assemble a full dossier on the nominee, including documentation of the following criteria for selection:

  • Demonstrates mastery of the advising process.
  • Provides accessibility, innovation and leadership in advising/mentoring.
  • Exhibits a caring attitude.
  • Shows familiarity with institutional regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Builds strong relationships with student advisees.
  • Engages in developmental advising versus simple course selection.
  • Impacts advisees beyond graduation.
  • Provides innovation and leadership in the advising/mentoring process.
  • Exercises creativity and innovation in advising/mentoring.

Nomination materials listed below should not total more than 8 pages (excluding cover sheet). All materials must specifically address this award.
The dossier should contain:

  • a cover sheet (use the COE Outstanding Undergraduate Academic Advisor Cover Sheet);
  • a cover letter of support from the advisor’s supervisor and/or department head (single-spaced with typeface no smaller than 11-point).
  • one-page biographical sketch of the nominee Nomination (single-spaced with typeface no smaller than 11-point).
  • a copy of the nominee’s Personal Statement on Advising Nomination (single-spaced with typeface no smaller than 11-point).
  • current letters of support from students, alumni, and/or knowledgeable peers. Letters from current students and recent graduates provide the strongest support.

Please note:Materials must address this award and items 2-5 above should total no more than eight pages, front and back.

Please submit the application as a PDF file electronically via email attachment to coersrch@uga.edu or PDF file on CD sent through campus mail to the Associate Dean for Research Office, c/o Faculty Awards Committee Secretary. Please name the nomination file as [Last Name]_[First Name]_OUAA. For example, the nomination for John Smith for COE Outstanding Undergraduate Academic Advisor would be named as “Smith_ John_OUAA.” Please label all separate attachments clearly.

Nomination packages, including documentation, are due in the Office of the Associate Dean for Research (G-10 Aderhold Hall) by noon on October 15 each year. Should this date fall on a weekend or holiday, nominations must be submitted by noon of the next working day.

 

Evaluation Criteria and Procedures


  • The Faculty Senate Awards Committee will be the review and selection body for this award.
  • Decisions will be based solely on the selection criteria contained in the nomination packet.
  • The Committee reserves the right not to recommend an award, if no nominations are acceptable.
