COE Donald O. Schneider Award for Mentoring

Purpose and Description

The University of Georgia College of Education has established the Donald O. Schneider Award for Mentoring. The award is named to honor former College administrator Donald O. Schneider, a facilitator, a collaborator, a mentor, and a man committed to public schools and teaching.  The purpose of the award is to recognize excellence in mentoring of University of Georgia students. There will be up to three awards made each year. The awardee will receive a plaque, recognition by the College at the Spring Celebration, and a $2,000 allowance for professional travel or development.

Guidelines and Criteria

Eligibility

  • Eligibility for the award will be limited to schools and community-based professionals and non-tenure, career-track faculty (e.g., supervising teachers and academic professionals) engaged in mentoring of graduate or undergraduate students in the College.
  • Past awardees and tenure-track faculty are not eligible.

Nominations

Each department in the College may forward to the Office of Associate Dean for Research and External Affairs one nomination per year. The Faculty Senate Awards Committee will review nominees.

Departments should submit the following for each candidate:

  • A letter of nomination detailing the nominee's major contributions through mentoring. The letter should contain evidence of student and/or faculty assessment of the nominee's mentoring activities. Examples of other potential contributions include use of innovative techniques for mentoring; consistent, high-quality mentoring over a period of time; and leadership or other professional contributions through mentoring. The letter of nomination should not exceed five single-spaced pages with typeface no smaller than 11-point.
  • A personal statement from the nominee describing the personal value of mentoring and how it contributed to his/her professional growth. The personal statement should not exceed one single-spaced page with typeface no smaller than 11-point.

Eleven copies of the nomination package, including documentation, are due in the Office of the Associate Dean for Research and External Affairs (G-10 Aderhold Hall) by January 17 each year. Should this date fall on a weekend or holiday, nominations should be submitted the next working day.
