COE Faculty Diversity Award

Purpose and Description

The purpose of the COE Faculty Diversity Award is to recognize faculty members whose research, teaching and/or service promotes a more diverse local, university and/or global community.  According to NCATE, diversity is defined as “differences among groups of people and individuals based on ethnicity, race, socioeconomic status, gender, exceptionalities, language, religion, sexual orientation, and geographic area.”

The recipient of the award will receive a $1,000.00 cash award* and a plaque. The award will be effective for the 2007-08 academic year to be awarded in spring 2008 with the other COE faculty awards and announced at the College's Spring Celebration.

*Cash awards are subject to tax.

Eligibility

  • Full-time tenured, tenure-track, or career-track faculty are eligible.
  • No faculty member serving on the COE Faculty Awards Committee is eligible for nomination during his or her term of service on this Committee.

Nominations

  • With the approval of the candidate, nominations may be made by any faculty member in the College of Education.
  • Eleven copies of the nomination package, including documentation, are due in the Office of the Associate Dean for Research and External Affairs (G-10 Aderhold Hall) by January 17 each year. Should this date fall on a weekend or holiday, nominations should be submitted the next working day.

Method of Selection

  • The College of Education’s Faculty Awards Committee will be the review and selection body for this award.
  • The Committee decisions will be based solely on the selection criteria contained in this document.
  • The Committee reserves the right not to recommend an award if no acceptable nomination is received.
  • One award will be given annually.

Criteria for Selection

    • The nominee's research, teaching, and/or service work reflects a commitment to and provides clear evidence of contributions to diversity.
    • The nominee contributes significantly to the climate of diversity at the college and in the community.

Guidelines for Preparing Nominations

All nominations must be prepared according to the guidelines presented below. Since members serving on the award committee may not be experts in the nominee's field, it is important that nominations are submitted in language understandable to faculty in other areas and disciplines.

The nomination packet should contain the following:

    • A one-page letter of nomination written and signed by one or more nominators that summarizes the nominee's qualifications for the award.
    • A description (not to exceed three single-spaced typed pages) of teaching, research, service and/or other creative activity upon which the nomination is based.  This can be prepared by the nominee or his/her nominator(s).
    • The nominee's current curriculum vitae.
