COE Ira E. Aaron Award for Teaching Excellence and Collegiality

Purpose and Description

The College of Education Ira E. Aaron Award for Teaching Excellence and Collegiality (formerly known as the COE Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence) was established in 1999 by Dr. Aaron. This award recognizes outstanding teaching by a faculty member who sets an example for collegiality. The recipient of the award receives a $5,000 instructional grant.

Guidelines and Criteria

Eligibility

  • All full-time tenured faculty (associate and full professors) are eligible.
  • An awardee is ineligible for renomination for five years.
  • No faculty member serving on the Faculty Senate Committee is eligible for nomination during his or her term of service on this Committee.

Nominations

  • With the approval of the candidate, nominations may be made by a group of any three faculty members.
  • Eleven copies of the nomination package, including documentation, are due in the Office of the Associate Dean for Research and External Affairs (G-10 Aderhold Hall) by January 17 each year. Should this date fall on a weekend or holiday, nominations should be submitted the next working day.

Method of Selection

  • The College Faculty Senate Awards Committee will be the review and selection body for this award.
  • Decisions will be based solely on the selection criteria contained in this document.
  • The Committee reserves the right not to recommend an award if no acceptable nominations are received.

Criteria for Selection

  • The classroom teaching competence of the nominee is clearly outstanding.  
  • The candidate has a well-defined teaching philosophy and approach to education.
  • The candidate has a distinguished record of collegiality and service to the department, the College, and/or the University.
  • The candidate has made a positive impact on students and has superior evaluations from students and/or alumni.

Guidelines for Preparing Nominations

  • A one-page vita. This vita should include information relative to the following:
    • Selected publications within the last five years.
    • Selected presentations within the last five years.
    • Previous honors/recognition for excellence in teaching.
    • Selected examples of strong support of College and/or University.
  • A one-page letter of nomination. This letter is to be written by the nominators and should define the nominee's qualifications for the award. Clear indication of the source of the nomination should be given, including the signatures of each nominator. 
  • The body of the nomination. It is limited to no more than three pages and should include all of the following components:
    • Rationale for considering the nominee to be an outstanding teacher. 
    • Nominee's personal statement regarding teaching, including a self-evaluation of the nominee's strengths and potential for growth in teaching. 
    • Description of the nominee's collegiality as evidenced by a summary of activities in which the nominee demonstrates strong support for the advancement of the College and/or University. 
    • Student evaluation of the nominee's teaching with an emphasis on the five years preceding the nomination. The evaluations may be of a qualitative and/or quantitative nature. 
    • Summary of current or former student accomplishments as it relates to the impact made by the nominee.
