EPEC Hosts Mock Presidential Debate

On October 23, several students and COE faculty gathered to hear two professors in the Educational Administration and Policy Program engage in a mock presidential debate. The debate, hosted by the Education Policy and Evaluation Center, was a non-partisan effort to explore dimensions of the candidates’ proposed education policies not fully addressed during the televised presidential debates.
Dr. Eric Houck discussed Republican Sen. John McCain’s education platform and Dr. Elizabeth DeBray-Pelot presented Democratic Sen. Barack Obama’s position on key education issues. Moderator Dr. Sheneka Williams opened with questions related to the candidates’ broad governmental philosophies then narrowed the focus to include several topics: the “child at the center” approach, the reauthorization of NCLB, early childhood education, teachers and the teaching profession, and Congress in the new administration. The mock candidates concluded the 45-minute debate by fielding questions from the audience.
